About the Shanzu Transitional Workshop
Shanzu is a workshop for disabled young women, established in 1992. Here they learn skills that will enable
them to become productive, confident members of the community.
They come to Shanzu at age 17 to start a 2 year live-in training program. During their stay they receive vocational
training, learn production skills and tailoring, as well as basic business experience and many other skills
necessary for an independent life. Upon completion of the training, each girl leaves with tailoring qualifications,
a sewing machine, and personal skills that will equip her for her new life.
Many of the girls come from backgrounds overshadowed by parents and a society who treat them either with
shame or pity, not allowing them to participate in the day-to-day life of the family and community.
The young women are paid a share of the profits when their work is sold to tourists and passers-by, and now
internationally through fair trade organizations. All of their products carry the distinctive Shanzu patch, not hidden
away but proudly sewn where everyone can see.
